SETTING STANDARDS ON SELF, OTHERS, & GOD
Dr. Stephen Phinney & Jonnie T.
This episode details that when a believer in Christ imposes rigid standards of conduct on themselves, others, and even God, they risk distorting the essence of grace and their indwelling faith.
Self-imposed standards can lead to legalism, where personal faith becomes more about rule-following than a genuine relationship with God. Holding others to personal expectations may foster judgment rather than compassion, causing division instead of unity within the body of Christ. The most dangerous outcome arises when believers attempt to set expectations on God Himself—demanding that He act within human limitations, rather than surrendering to His sovereignty. This can lead to disillusionment when life doesn't unfold as expected, weakening trust instead of strengthening faith. True spiritual growth comes not from rigid self-made frameworks, but from humbly walking in faith, allowing God’s guidance to shape the journey rather than personal control.
